Brief introduction of National Academy for Mayors of China
National Academy for Mayors of China (originally National Training Center for Mayors of China) was established in 1983.It is a professional training institution directly under Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. Under the leading group of Central Organization Department(COD), MOHURD and China Association for Science and Technology(CAST),the mission of NAMC is to train mayors and other relevant governors in the fields of urban development strategies, urban planning, urban construction and urban management. The training goal is to build and improve mayors’ and governors’ capacities and leaderships for managing the cities and to promote the sustainable development of China cities. It has carried out 49 comprehensive training programs (for one month), 21 seminars focused on special subjects (for 7-10 days) . NAMC has carried out 14 overseas training programs (for 21 days) cooperated with institutes and companies of the US, Singapore, Australia, France and Netherlands. Up to now, there are more than 4000 mayors and other government officials nation-wide who have participated in NAMC’s training courses.
NAMC now conducts comprehensive training programs, monographic study and overseas training programs. It also
-assists the local government to conduct training programs which are tailor-made and organizes experts to consult in urban planning, construction and management for cities
-co-operates with many international organizations and institutions in U.S., German, France, Holland, Canada, Australia etc.
-being UN-Habitat’s important training partner, conducts training courses for foreign development countries.
-carried out training program for Construction Cadres of Vietnam.
Farther more, the seminars focused on special subject about urban planning for county governor was carried out in the early of 2008, and the same seminars for leaders of large industrial and mining enterprises has been carried out in the middle of 2008.
In a word, NAMC has become the training base for mayors, the consulting center for urban issues, and the international channel for training cooperation and exchanges.
